Chapter 3: Pain
After Sokka and Aang came back with some food and fresh water for Toph, they left the girls alone. Sokka had originally planned to stay but Katara assured him Toph fainted because of lack of sleep. He was hesitant but he left them alone.
He and Aang decided to go for a walk in the park. They boarded Appa and head over to Republic City. They strolled through the peaceful scenery as they watched couples and children pass them. Sokka and Suki had many dates at this park.
The memory brought back the pain of his break up. Even though he had loved Suki and treasured her, he just couldn't deny that special place in his heart for Toph. Seeing her today in her current state, made him feel useless. He couldn't do anything to make her feel better.
He didn't like it when she felt pain. He'd rather be the one in pain than her. He just couldn't stand the thought of seeing her like that. Sokka felt his heart ache as he had watched Toph collapse, but at the same time he felt happy to have her in his arms.
He wanted her to be his. Sokka shook his head. Toph already had Noma. The man that beat him to the punch. He could feel his regret resurface, but he didn't give in. He knew that it was tearing him apart inside.
His thoughts were interrupter when a man accidentally bumped into him. The man had his arm around a girl, but he didn't notice he even bumped into Sokka. Sokka took a closer look at the man. He felt like he'd seen him somewhere before, but he couldn't remember.
Sokka watches the couple leave, but Aang calls for his attention.
"Sokka." Aang said.
"Sorry, can you repeat that?" Sokka said shaking his head.
"I said, are you going to the 18th Anniversary Founding of Republic City Gala?" Aang asked.
"Oh! Yeah, all the council members are supposed to attend." Sokka replied. "Why?"
"Because they want the gang to get together. You know, me, you, Katara, Toph, Zuko, and Suki."
"Why Suki?"
"Because, she helped out during Sozin's Comet, remember?"
"Oh yeah."
"I just want to know if you're going to be fine with Suki there."
"I will don't worry."
Aang gave his friend a suspicious look, but Sokka reassured him he would. Aang pulled out his bison whistle and called Oppa. They boarded the fluffy bison and headed back to the island.
